Different urban landscape in Europe are systematically presented in a basic analysis, showing some of the main morphological layers. Looking at fig. 1, several characteristic configurations seem to emerge from the map of Europe. Starting from an aerial photograph, examples of these are isolated to show the built mass, infrastructure, negative pace, nature, agriculture and water (fig. 4-12). The drawings are not accompanied by text and the conclusions to the analysis are not presented in drawing.

The analysis is straightforward in its techniques but attracts attention because of the detailed drawings and its unusual scope. The main argument of the book focuses on the fact that many of of the most densely populated European urban areas are not traditional cities but a sprawl of smaller centres.

In the book, the analyses are followed by several design proposals for the Belgian “Vlaamse ruit”, the area between Antwerp, Gent and Brussels.
